# Job Description

John Snow, Inc. JSI is a U.S.-based public health consulting firm dedicated
to providing high quality technical and managerial assistance to public health
programs throughout the world. JSI seeks a highly qualified communications
manager for the USAID-funded Supporting an AIDS Free Era SAFE Project in
Zambia. USAID SAFE is a $142 million investment to reduce HIV mortality,
morbidity, and transmission, while improving nutrition outcomes and family
planning integration, in three provinces with the highest burdens of HIV:
Central, Copperbelt, and North-Western.

USAID SAFE works alongside the Government of the Republic of Zambia towards a
vision of a nation free from the threat of HIV by 2030. USAID SAFE is one of
the largest treatment service delivery programs for USAID in Zambia, serving
over 300,000 people. In partnership with the government, private sector, and
civil society institutions at the national, provincial, district, and facility
levels, USAID SAFE is establishing service delivery systems where there is
unmet need, strengthening existing service delivery platforms, and increasing
the government’s ability to manage USAID assistance activities. USAID SAFE
supports 267 public health facilities and 31 private facilities.

The communications manager will refine and execute a comprehensive,
multichannel strategic information plan that ensures project results and
achievements are communicated in a timely manner to key target audiences. This
role requires close collaboration with the USAID SAFE senior team,
technical advisors, and monitoring and evaluation staff to effectively tell
the story of SAFE’s accomplishments and contributions to strengthening
Zambia’s health system and HIV response. The communications manager is part of
the strategic information team and reports to the Deputy Chief of Party for
Monitoring, Evaluation, and Results.


–>Fully understand the donor’s communications and outreach strategy and expected project contributions; liaise with donor to regularly provide program information to support their communications and outreach objectives;
–>Ensure the program is taking advantage of key communication opportunities and advise the chief of party COP and senior leadership as needed;
–>Lead the refinement of the project’s strategic information plan and work with technical and M&E staff to design and develop related products;
–>Work with key program staff to compile, write, and finalize monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for USAID. Coordinate the entire process to ensure these program deliverables meet internal and donor deadlines;
–>Work with program staff to compile, write, and disseminate technical briefs, policy briefs, reports, blogs, and other program documentation products as needed;
–>Manage contracts with professional photographers and videographers and direct production of compelling, short videos that focus on the results and human impact of the work;
–>Create compelling content for JSI and donor social media platforms, using strategies to reach key audiences who use social media;
–>Track all relevant international, regional, and national conferences and support program staff to develop abstracts; manage and coordinate program conferences and other high profile events;
–>Manage and maintain media relations in Zambia and monitor media coverage of the project;
–>Provide guidance to program staff on JSI corporate branding and USAID branding guidelines;
–>Ensure project-produced public communications and materials are branded correctly according to the program branding strategy and marking plan;
–>Manage consultants, when necessary, in areas of photography, videography, media outreach, graphic design;
–>Work closely with JSI U.S. office USAID SAFE communications backstop and corporate communications to communicate USAID SAFE achievements and results to global audiences; and
–>Perform other duties as assigned by the deputy COP.


–>Master’s degree in public health, international development, communications, or a related field;
–>Seven to ten years of experience working in a communications and/or documentation role in national/international development, public health, nonprofit, or corporate setting;
–>Excellent communication skills written and verbal in English;
–>Ability to conceptualize, write, and edit technical public health content;
–>Demonstrated ability to work with professional videographers to produce video content that tells a compelling, succinct, and results-based story;
–>Demonstrated ability to create compelling content for social media platforms;
–>Strong interpersonal skills with ability to manage timelines;
–>Ability to establish and maintain excellent relationships with program team members, donors, and other cooperating agencies;
–>Experience using Adobe Creative Suite programs, or similar design software is a plus;
–>Prior work history with USAID-funded projects preferred.
