# Job Description

Frankfurt Zoological Society conserves wildlife and ecosystems focussing on
protected areas and outstanding wild places. FZS maintains long-term
conservation programmes in Africa, South America, Asia, and Europe. The Africa
Programme is FZS’ largest and oldest and is active in five focal countries:
The Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

FZS Zambia FZS-Z has been active in the North Luangwa Ecosystem since 1986
and Nsumbu since 2017, working to conserve these globally important wilderness
areas. FZS-Z supports effective and efficient protected area , with
a focus on law enforcement and community outreach with a focus on empowering
host custodians in GMAs to manage their own resources. Particularly, the North
Luangwa Ecosystem Programme NLCP has the mission of ‘Linking Livelihoods and
Landscapes’. NLCP works using the following strategies:

1\. Protect=Conserve=Preserve- This aims to implement robust and adaptive
large landscape enforcement tactics and capability to protect, conserve, and
preserve wildlife habitats and ecological services.
2\. Empower=Educate=Enterprise- This aims to implement creative and beneficial
initiatives to empower, educate and deliver enterprise opportunities for
neighbouring communities and wider Zambian society.
3\. Communicate=Connect=Change- This aims to implement focused messaging to
communicate and connect with stakeholders and partners for effective and
positive change; and
4\. Structure=Systems=Support- This aims to implement a clear and enduring
organization and financial structure with efficient systems to support a
mentally and physically healthy team.

JOB DESCRIPTION: COMMUNITY CONSERVATION EDUCATOR 1 POSITION – MUKUNGULE
GMA

4\. Location / Station

Mukungule Chiefdom working in the following school communities; Changalilo,
Chobela, Chilyaba, Chishala, Lwanya, Mano, Mukungule and Katibunga within the
North Luangwa Ecosystem. May also be required to work at other locations as
the job requires

5\. Frequency of Reporting:

Monthly

A competitive salary will be paid based on qualifications and experience

7\. Objective / Purpose

This is a field-based position to assist Community Education Coordinator in
facilitating / implementing the provision of conservation education to the
schools and communities of the Mukungule Chiefdom in line with NLCP’s
strategy. This is in line with the partnership between Frankfurt Zoological
Society FZS and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife DNPW.

8\. Duties

The Community Conservation Educator shall be responsible for assisting the
Community Education Coordinator in smooth implementation of educational field-
based activities for the ccommunity outreach services in Mukungule GMA.
Specifically, the duties shall be as follows:

a. Conservation Education Lessons and Activities in Schools. The CCE will

–>Together with CEC develop a timetable which he/she CCE will distribute ahead of each term for his/her programme at all schools in his/her zone.
–>Act as a liaison between FZS/Lolesha Luangwa management and the Head Teachers and Conservation/Chongololo Club patrons at the schools in his/her zone.
–>Ensure that teaching and learning guides / resources are sufficiently provided and available.
–>Facilitate lessons/activities within the Conservation/Chongololo Clubs as agreed with schools/as per the circulated timetable and the lesson plans or programmes.
–>Assist the CEC in the facilitation of any other FZS/Lolesha Luangwa student activities when requested such as overnight trips/LL nature nights, student activities, environmental campaigns, or excursions with students.
–>Professionally represent FZS/Lolesha Luangwa when working in the schools and community in his/her zone.
–>Regularly communicate with CEC on the learning and skill needs of the club and community members he/she must be ears on the ground to listen to people’s views and proposals
–>Prepare records of work, class lists/registers for conservation/environmental education club members
–>Maintain appropriate files for community groups / conservation clubs and resources
–>Provide mentorship/counsel and support to conservation education club members and community groups
–>Assist to ttranslate documents from Bisa / Bemba to English and vice versa as and when required
–>Participate in teachers’ training workshops and cluster meetings as and when required
–>Carry out any other instructions from regarding conservation education within schools in his/her zone.

b. Community Outreach Programme/Activities in the Community

The CCE will

–>Carry out surveys/research activities within the community of his/her zone as and when directed.
–>Create and maintain an up-to-date database of any clubs, organisations, societies, cooperatives, NGOs, Government Departments, significant companies, eminent individuals etc. within his/her zone.
–>Maintain a logbook of any significant events that occur in his/her zone that relate directly to conservation or that might otherwise have an impact on conservation and report them weekly.
–>Act as a liaison between FZS/Lolesha Luangwa management and the Chief, Indunas, headmen/women, CRB/VAG and any other eminent community people within his/her zone.
–>Facilitate conservation education lessons/discussions/activities within community groups and villages as agreed with the mini change project group.
–>Carry out research using the Internet, books, magazines or other media, and plan lessons/discussions/practical demonstrations/activities using the information, as directed.
–>Assist the CEC / CLA / CCO in the preparation of a timetable relevant to the community programme in his/her zone.
–>Organise community engagement activities like drama/role play, anti-environmental degradation campaigns etc. with support from Community Outreach Management.

c. General

The CCE will

–>Follow the FZS Human Rights Policy for engaging students and community members with regards to race, age, gender, sexuality, or religion
–>Follow the Standard Operating Procedures SOPs for engaging schools and communities in conservation related matters/activities amid COVID 19
–>Ensure that conservation education assets and property are safeguarded and advise Community Outreach Management on assets/property that requires special maintenance
–>Ensure that an inventory of all conservation education equipment and requisites is maintained
–>Adhere to annual FZS and donor budgets following FZS and donor financial management policy and procedures for proper and transparent use of project funds
–>Report to the FZS / Community Outreach Offices as directed for updates, training, discussions, report writing, research and lesson planning, and/or at any other time as requested by the CEC
–>Be flexible in the school holidays and report more frequently to the FZS/Community Outreach Office for report writing, lesson planning, training etc.
–>Be responsible for the timely submission of monthly reports and any other reports/documentation requested of them, and forward to the CEC

The Community Conservation Educator is expected to be competent in each of the
following areas and exhibit these competencies while carrying out their
duties:

–>Initiatives: Pro-active, energetic, and a self –starter. Recognise and discuss new opportunities report and address problems in a timely manner. Maintain effective communication with management, project partners, and stake holders
–>Flexibility: Adaptable, resourceful, and receptive to new ideas; willing and able to adjust to changing circumstances.
–>Integrity: Honest, reliable, and maintain high ethical standards. Show respect and fairness when dealing with others

9\. Qualifications

The CCE shall have:

–>A minimum of a full Grade 12 school certificate with credit / better: 5 O’ Levels including Mathematics and English.
–>A certificate or diploma in social science / education / wildlife management / community / rural development will be an added advantage
–>Be Mukungule resident, at least 3 years living with the rural communities in Mukungule GMA
–>Knowledge about workings of education system in Zambia and CRB/VAG. Knowledge in Zambian education system, CBNRM, principles of good governance, and general wildlife and natural resources management in Zambia will be an advantage
–>Knowledge of existing natural resources and wildlife challenges within the resident custodian area will be an advantage.
–>Practical experience working with traditional authorities will be an added advantage.
